Correction for ImJustAnotherHuman

Description

:iconimjustanotherhuman: asked for anatomycorrections on fav.me/dayv2se, so I thought I'd give it a go :) (Smile)  Notes are below:

1) The idea's there. First we're going to start with proportions, then some anatomy tips.

2) The body (from the top of the head to the top of the thighs) is about 3 1/2 to 4 heads tall. I like 4 heads personally because it gives lots of 'landmarks'- the head is one head tall, the shoulders and chest are one head below that, the waist and navel are at the line between the 3rd and 4th head, and at the bottom of the 4th head, the body stops and the legs begin. This system also provides guides for the arms- the shoulders begin at about half-way in the 2nd head, the elbows are level with the navel at the bottom of the 3rd head, and the wrists are about level with the bottom of the body.

3) Basic corrections. I find it useful to actually start a drawing this way, but on a smaller scale- thumb-nailing, doing smaller sketches to figure out pose and basic large-scale anatomy. Then I scale it up and start cleaning it up and adding details. One of the things that it can be useful to keep in mind here is the concept of 3-dimensionality. If you think of the neck and arms as cylinders, and the chest area (the rib cage) as a box, then it can be easier to get the basics down right, and it helps with foreshortening (this can be a useful way to line up shoulders more accurately).

4) This is the start of that details stage- it's a good place to make corrections (I did change the angle of her left arm). This is also where a more developed understanding of anatomy will come in handy. It's important to know how the body moves, and your best resource is yourself! Even if you don't have a mirror, it can be helpful to try to position yourself in the pose you're trying to draw, at least to see if actually works. You can also find a unwilling victim model for you to reference (this is also a good way to get a better understanding of anatomy in a 3-d sense), and you can find many excellent tutorials, photographic and drawn reference here on  DeviantArt  It's really helpful to have a large collection of references.

5) This is the details stage. I sketched in her hair and clothes. It looks like you're already thinking of clothes in a 3-d sense (having mass and folding around things), so you're pretty good there! The only things I really noted here was that the lady seems to be old enough to have a figure, which would affect the shape or fit of her clothes somewhat. The only other thing was folds on the cloth of the puff of her sleeve- this is folded cloth, and adding some visible folds can add to the sense of it the drawing having shape and form.

6) That's all! I'd suggest starting and using a reference collection, and maybe starting your drawings out with simple shapes before detailing them. The most important thing you can really do though is keep drawing, no matter what :happybounce:
